Objectives and Expectations Tips

  • There is a difference between objectives and goals. Learning is the main objective or purpose.

  • Instructional alignment- flow from content assessment (make objective clear)

  • Make "nuts and bolts" for the course clear from the start. Let students know what is required and provide expectations

  • Use a student-friendly voice (tone)

  • Make objectives measureable (students don’t always read the syllabus). Objectives should be measurable, behavioral, and observable.

  • Create a video syllabus to visually inform students (using Tegrity®)

  • Create chart of objectives, activites and assessments iin the syllabus to show students how each is related to the other.

  • Establish objectives for each week

  • Write objectives from the student's perspective

  • Use Blackboard's Adaptive Release feature: select a course in Blackboard >>control panel>>course documents>>create or select a document>>manage>>adaptive release

  • Establish interaction boundaries (know when to stop)

  • Separate out components of syllabus online. Policy, Grading, Schedule, keeps syllabus from appearing so long. Helps students find the information quicker.
